MAKS 2007 reaches for the stars
Russia's largest international air show MAKS 2007 is into its second day - Europe Day. A number of multi-million dollar deals have already been made at the show. Among the latest is Russia's contract with Iran to sell five Tu-204 passenger jets to the Islamic Republic. Besides, Russia, the U.S. and Europe have signed a memorandum of understanding to develop unified satellite systems to keep track of weather patterns and climate change.
The greatest part of Wednesday's presentations is demonstrating European involvement in manned space flights. Thus, the Russian and European space agencies are expected to present Project Mars-500, which simulates a manned flight to Mars.

“Russia is definitely a leader in the space industry sector. I’m talking about manned space activities such as the development of spacecraft that can travel beyond the earth’s orbit and explore the Moon, Mars and other planets. We have equipment in space that can take high resolution photos of the Earth’s surface - up to a million square metres per day. We also have world-class communication systems with a lifespan of fifteen years, and other systems that allow us to be competitive on the local market and abroad. We hope that MAKS 2007 will give the Russian aviation and space industries the boost they deserve,” commented Anatoly Perminov, Head of the Russian space agency Roscosmos.
[External Link Removed for Guests]

At the last MAKS air show two years ago, it was the next generation in spacecraft which was making the news. The Russian Space Agency announced then their plans to develop the Kliper (Clipper) shuttle, a successor to the Soyuz which has been orbiting the Earth for 40 years.

It is possible, however, that the project may not be carried out. An independent space expert, Yury Karash, explained this was due to the imperfect design that needs to be improved.

Still, expectations are high to see what comes out of MAKS 2007. So far, there have been no major surprises for space developments. Instead, the focus seems to be on continued collaboration.

Just about four years ago it looked like Russian aviation was in a state of a coma. So the Russian authorities decided to take measures aimed at reviving the industry. So agreements on strategic partnership with EADS and Airbus were signed. Still, we are realistic. We are completely aware that we are unable to challenge Boeing and Airbus – at least for the moment. That’s why we opt for a low-cost niche.

Ruslan Pukhov, Centre for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies“We have long-standing ties with Russia but each time we make even more progress. I would say that our co-operation with Russia is growing wider and wider,” says Jean-Jacques Dordain, Head of the European Space Agency (ESA).

ESA's management and its Russian counterpart, Roscosmos, have stressed their commitment to working together to explore space, research new technologies and maintain a free flow of communication. But the most significant step involves joining resources to build a spaceship.

“We are holding very serious talks with the European Space Agency. Jean-Jacques Dordain has come with all his deputies and a number of experts. And we keep in mind several possible ways of co-operation. We are speaking about strategies for five or even more years ahead,” says Head of the Federal Space Agency, Anatoly Perminov.

Progress in space is one of the things most talked about at this year’s air show. New projects include a number of missions, all of them important for Russia as one of the leaders in space exploration.

As for civil aviation, several major deals were closed within two days. On Wednesday, Siberia-based Irkut company concluded a contract to produce landing gear for A 320 jets. The planes are one of the most popular in the world and the deal is likely to bring considerable revenue to the company.

Meanwhile, Vladimir Sautov from the Irkut company told Russia Today that demand for the group's products is not limited to the landing gear.

“It was a good opportunity to present here at the Moscow air show several new products. Well, first of all is our lead item - a next generation combat flight simulator, the Yak-130. Yesterday and today, we organised flight simulations and we held a lot of negotiations here with our foreign customers from different countries. Another one is the B-200 amphibian jet, one of the best for fire-fighting. Probably you know that nowadays this aircraft is used by the Portuguese government, as well as the Greek Republic, for fire-fighting there,” he explains.

Also, in addition to the sale of six fighter jets to Indonesia on Tuesday, Russian military aircraft manufacturer Sukhoi has announced plans to market their Su-100 SuperJets to the West.

Some experts say that despite co-operation with Western companies, the Russian aviation industry is not likely to see major progress in the near future.

“Now there are lots of opportunities for the Russian industry to work in partnership with Airbus and Boeing and the unified industry has already a good relationship with Airbus. However, this will be a supplier relationship. Russia is not going to build any big aircraft. There is no sign of that coming at all. Sadly, those days for the Russian civil aircraft industry seem to be over,” believes Robert Hewson, aviation expert.

To watch Robert Hewson talking live from the MAKS 2007 air show about how it differs from the previous ones, please follow the link.

Others, though, view the situation from a more optimistic perspective.

“Just about four years ago it looked like Russian aviation was in a state of a coma. So the Russian authorities decided to take measures aimed at reviving the industry. So agreements on strategic partnership with EADS and Airbus were signed. Still, we are realistic. We are completely aware that we are unable to challenge Boeing and Airbus – at least for the moment. That’s why we opt for a low-cost niche,” says Ruslan Pukhov from the Centre for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies.

First aircraft deals signed at MAKS 2007
The first day of Russia's largest international air show MAKS 2007, that takes place every two years, has ended with a number of major deals already signed. Around 800 companies from more than 40 countries opened their stands to display the aviation industry's latest products.
This year, private jet owners are participating as well.
[External Link Removed for Guests]

This year's MAKS is different from the previous ones, because we are not only demonstrating our latest achievements, but also speaking about long-term development plans for the aviation industry in our country. The development of aviation and our long-term strategy will be represented at many stalls here, at those of the United Aircraft Corporation and its enterprises, and those of our suppliers, who are working on this strategy with us.
Mikhail Pogosyan,
Head of Sukhoi Holding

[url=http://upload2.postimage.org/394765/photo_hosting.html]تصویر

Traditionally, MAKS is a place for business sensations and several companies have already hinted at possible deals.

Sukhoi will announce its joint venture with Italy's Finmeccanica - the company will supply spare parts for Sukhoi's first civil aircraft, the SuperJet 100. This time not only military jets are in focus, but passenger ones as well.

And analysts expect deals not just with European partners. They call India and China Russia's strategic partners.

China seems to be ready for co-operation, sending a delegation of up to 500 people.

Others have already made up their minds. Russian airline Transaero is expected to sign up for ten SuperJets from Sukhoi.

Meantime, Sukhoi has already sold six fighter jets at MAKS 2007 – three Su-27s and as many Su-30s to Indonesian Air Force.

Leasing company Ilyushin Finance has signed deals totaling half a billion dollars with State Transportation Company Rossia and Airlines 400, a Moscow-based airline.

And the Russian space agency Roscosmos has agreed to a partnership deal with the European Space Agency to build a new kind of spacecraft that will supply the International Space Station.

“We have been discussing how we can co-operate in the construction of a space transport system which will not only reach Earth's orbit including the International Space Station but will go as far as the Moon and Mars. Joint Russian-European discussions are due to start in September. And by the end of 2007 we are supposed to draw up guidelines of our future co-operation,” commented Anatoly Perminov, head of Federal Space Agency Roscosmos.

Boeing Projects $70 Billion Market for Russia an[/si

MOSCOW, Aug. 22, 2007 -- Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) will require 1,060 new airplanes worth about $70 billion over the next 20 years, according to The Boeing Company's [NYSE:BA] updated annual forecast for the commercial airplane market. The complete forecast, known as the Boeing Current Market Outlook, is available on the Boeing web.
This year marks the first year that Boeing has published its forecast for the Russia/CIS region as part of the Current Market Outlook.
Airplanes in the Boeing 737 size range will account for 44 percent of all commercial jetliners delivered to Russian and CIS airlines during the next 20 years, amounting to 470 units valued at $30 billion.
Eleven percent -- or 110 units at a value of $20 billion -- will be twin-aisle airplanes like the Boeing 777 and 787.
Forty-three percent will be smaller regional jets while airplanes of the Boeing 747 size or larger will comprise 2 percent of the market.
"We will witness significant growth in the demand for air travel as the economies of Russia and the CIS continue to expand," said Craig Jones, vice president of Sales for Russia/CIS, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "Both domestic and international air traffic has increased in Russia and the CIS by 36 percent over the last 10 years. Most indicators point toward continued economic growth for the region."
"We've already seen airlines like Aeroflot and S7 Airlines in Russia, AeroSvit in the Ukraine, Azerbaijan Airlines and Uzbekistan Airways order new single-aisle and twin-aisle airplanes this year. We can expect continued steady demand for new airplanes as airlines look to modernize and grow their fleets," Jones said.
"Liberalization of air traffic regulations, airline consolidation and the reduction or elimination of high tariffs on new airplanes could generate additional demand for new airplanes."
The flying public's demand for more point-to-point travel options will also stimulate demand for smaller airplanes. In the past, large airplanes like the 747 were the only airplanes able to fly very long distances. This forced large numbers of passengers to make connections through major hubs to get to their ultimate destinations, through what is called the hub-and-spoke system.
As smaller airplanes such as the Next-Generation 737, the 777 and the 787 are much more fuel efficient thanks to advanced technologies and innovation, they are able to fly longer distances with fewer passengers than a 747 and still remain profitable for the airlines that operate them.
For instance, today a traveler in Moscow wanting to fly to Honolulu or Rio de Janeiro would have to fly through Los Angeles or another large city first, then onto Honolulu or Rio de Janeiro. A passenger in Novosibirsk going to Havana would have to fly through Moscow first. With the 787, that same traveler can fly direct from Moscow to Honolulu, Moscow to Rio de Janeiro, or Novosibirsk to Havana.
Illustrating the emergence of point-to-point, in Europe the number of nonstop flights has grown at an average rate of about 5 percent and the average airplane size has fallen. More passengers are flying direct routes on smaller airplanes.
The Next-Generation 737 will help airlines meet demand for shorter, more direct routes, and the all-new fuel-efficient Boeing 787 Dreamliner will provide needed capacity for longer-range direct flights.
As air traffic increases, newer airplanes such as the Next-Generation 737, the 787 and the 747-8 Intercontinental will help meet increased demand while also lowering airplane emissions compared to older aircraft. Boeing and its engine partners will continue to develop new-technology breakthroughs, beyond those on the 787, to further reduce aircraft emissions.
"Today aviation represents 2 percent of global emissions while contributing 8 percent to the world economy. It's a small percentage, but nonetheless we are committed to continuing to find ways to reduce the environmental impact of our products," Jones said.
Air traffic within Russia and the CIS is expected to grow 6 percent per year over the next 20 years. Traffic on transatlantic routes between Russia/CIS and North America is projected to increase 4.1 percent annually.
Worldwide, Boeing estimates the fleet will require 28,600 new jets by 2026 worth about $2.8 trillion. The Boeing market forecast is widely regarded as the most comprehensive and respected analysis of the commercial aviation market.

‘Moscow Day’ at MAKS-2007 air show

Moscow Day’ at MAKS-2007 air show
Russia's Federal Space Agency has presented a project called Arktika at the MAKS-2007 air show. Consisting of four spacecraft, the system will monitor the Arctic in search of oil and gas. Meanwhile, the third day of the show has been dubbed Moscow Day. Around 200 companies from Moscow and the Moscow region have been presenting their latest aviation products.

[External Link Removed for Guests]

The air show on Thursday has been started by a Russian jet which has been displaying the Russian flag of a huge size, 18 metres by 20 metres, thus able to get to the Russian Guinness Book of World Records.

With some 40 countries represented, MAKS-2007 has become one of the most internationally attended events to be held in the country.

As engines roar and struggle to outdo each other, the participants of the show are vying for clients. After the previous show resulted in a billion dollars worth of contracts, the buzz is all about money.

“Citizens pay much attention to military engineering. Big countries must show their power,” Zhu Hui-Jun from the Northwestern Polytechnic University noted.

Rockets, passenger planes, even fighter jets are presented: the Chinese manufacturers have made a giant leap over the past few decades. But while Chinese specialists brought primarily plastic models of their aircraft, they show keen interest in real things.

“Taking pictures here and making copies at home – we are not going to do that. We are not spies!” Zhu Hui-Jun assured.
For the U.S. Air Force, it’s already its second
visit to MAKS
For the U.S. Air Force, it’s already its second visit to MAKS. F-15 and F-16 fighter jets are present at the show, a Globemaster cargo plane, and a B-52 bomber as well. Nicknamed Stratofortress, B-52s used to covertly patrol Soviet borders in the 1960s. Now it’s among the most popular aircraft at the show.

Several deals have been concluded estimated at hundreds of millions of US dollars. On Thursday, Boeing agreed to sell four of its 737 planes to Russia. And on Wednesday, a busy day for Russian aviation at MAKS-2007, Russian company Ilyushin signed a deal to sell planes to both Cuba and Iran.

Also Russian manufacturer Sukhoi and Italian air space engineering firm Alenia Aeronautica agreed on a plan to set up a joint venture to sell and maintain the Russian Super Jet 100. The headquarters of the company is set to be located in Venice. The Alenia Aeronautica company has facilities to ensure that the new Russian plane is able to sell on the European and U.S. markets. Vladimir Babak, President of the Sukhoi Attack Aircraft Concern, said that the reason for this foreign investment could be Sukhoi’s safety records.

“There are a few examples of SU-25s being hit or blown up in the air, and the pilots survived each time. One example being Russia’s former Vice President Aleksandr Rutskoy who was hit twice and survived both times. He is absolutely fine and healthy now. This plane is designed for the safety of the crew. I have been working with this plane for almost 30 years now and I consider it the choice for ground troop support,” Vladimir Babak commented.

Sukhoi have also said that they expect the first public demonstration of the Russian Super Jet 100 to be in September. They expect the first sale of nine planes in 2009.

Meanwhile, not everyone is sure in the Sukhoi Super Jet 100’s quick success. Production is behind schedule and the plane has not yet made a test flight. While Super Jet is grabbing the headlines, other Russian models are grabbing the sales.

But the President of Sukhoi Civil Aircraft insists the first model will fly this year and he is bullish about its prospects.

“We’ve surveyed the market for our Super Jet 100: by 2024 the total market for regional jets will be about 5,700. We are planning to sell 800 planes, 300 in Russia and the CIS and another 500 around the world,” Viktor Soubbotin, President of the Sukhoi Civil Aircraft stated.

That would give it about 15% of the market for mid-range planes, competing both with Russia’s Antonov and the leaders in the segment, Brazil’s Embraer, and Bombardier of Canada.

Industry insiders say it’s too early to predict whether the Super Jet will be a success.

“Particularly when you try to do something for the very first time, which is what Sukhoi are doing, building an aircraft of this type, the plane really survives first contact with the real world in research and development. My second speculation now is the cost. Developmental cost now is around $US 1.4 BLN, which is half-a-million more than an Embraer-170, 190,” Reuben F. Johnson, aviation analyst, Aviation Week, noted.

About 60 business jets are sold in Russia every year, with prices ranging from $US 1 MLN to $US 60 MLN. As Russian incomes take off so do the sales, advancing by 10% each year.

"We are expecting approximately 20-25 serious potential buyers here at the air show,” Marc Duchesne from the Bombardier company said.

Some visitors are comparing MAKS 2007 to Chinatown, not only because it’s very crowded but also because there are a lot of guests from the East. The Chinese delegation is the largest at the air show with more than 500 people.

[External Link Removed for Guests]
[External Link Removed for Guests]

Sukhoi is one of Russia’s most successful aircraft manufactures, but only one company within the umbrella of the United Aircraft Corporation. And although Super Jet dominates the headlines, it has no firm orders and has failed to excite European clients, unlike Tupolev’s 204, which is tailored to the needs of low-cost airlines.

Ilyushin Finance on Wednesday announced orders for the Tu-204 from Cuba and Iran

“Some Russian planes are very effective, like Tupolev-204, which is good for medium and long-haul flights," Aleksandr Rubtsov, Ilyushin Finance CEO, noted.

And the principal shareholder of budget airline Blue Wings said that it aims to buy 10 TU-204s for its fleet this autumn.

Planes like Super Jet may be the hope for the future, but it’s the workhorses like the 204 that are bringing in the cash now.

There are opportunities in today's market. Our main competitors are Boeing and Airbus. The MS-21 plane we're about to produce is a serious project with 150-170 seats. Of course, we aren’t that naive to think we might grab the market. Ten to fifteen percent of the world's market, plus sales at home, will be quite enough for us.
Oleg Demchenko, President of the IRKUT Corporation
Meanwhile, according to the President of the IRKUT Corporation, Oleg Demchenko, gaps in today's civil aviation market are helping Russian producers sell their passenger jets. Mr Demchenko also said the group has high hopes for its new medium-size passenger plane, the MS-21.

"What do you mean that we don't have experience in civil aviation?! Indeed, the IRKUT Corporation hasn't been involved in civil aviation construction, but the Russian industry in general has always been strong in that. Long before Airbus started producing its planes, we had the TU-154, IL-62 and IL-86. Also we're in negotiations with the Airbus company and expect that some of their A-320-technologies will be implemented in our plane. Perhaps, it will even be a joint project," Oleg Demchenko noted.

But the show is not just about aviation. There were also quite a few international space projects presented. There was a big press conference held by Roscosmos, the Russian federal space agency where the space programmes for the future were outlined. The emphasis was on the continuous close collaboration with European partners. It has also been mentioned that the main thing to do now is to improve and update the existing spacecraft, some of which have been in use for decades.

Boeing Converted Freighters Help Aeroflot Cargo Extend Life of MD-11 Fleet
MOSCOW, Aug. 23, 2007 -- The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA] is helping Aeroflot-Cargo improve its operational efficiency and adapt to growing cargo market demands by converting two MD-11 passenger airplanes into freighters and updating their flight deck features and cargo-handling system so that they are consistent across Aeroflot-Cargo's fleet.
"These aircraft represent a very substantial investment. By putting them in the hands of the original manufacturer for conversion, we can extend the life of the aircraft and maximize their capabilities," said Aeroflot-Cargo General Director Andrey Goryashko. "The Boeing Converted Freighter program gives us the confidence and support that we expect with a new airplane while allowing us to make the most of the fleet we already have."
A converted MD-11 has a capacity of 205,400-pounds (93.2 tones) structural payload at a range of 3,486 nautical miles (6,456 kilometers) and is capable of 630,500-pounds (286,000 kg) maximum takeoff weight. The main and lower deck cargo compartments hold a total of 36 96-by-125-inch pallets or containers.
"This conversion program allows Aeroflot Cargo to streamline and modernize its operational systems across its freighter fleet," said Daniel da Silva, vice president for Sales and Marketing, Boeing Commercial Aviation Services.
Aeroflot-Cargo currently operates four DC-10 Freighters. In addition to these two MD-11s, Aeroflot-Cargo has committed to lease three more MD-11 Boeing Converted Freighters from the Boeing Capital Corporation within the 2007-2008 timeframe.
Modification work will begin in November 2008. Boeing Commercial Aviation Services will provide detailed engineering design work and oversight of the Aeroflot-Cargo conversions, with SASCO, a subsidiary of Singapore Technologies Aerospace, providing touch labor on the airplanes.
In total, Boeing has converted more than 100 MD-11 passenger airplanes to freighters.  [/ ]

[External Link Removed for Guests]
